Frozen condensate pipe? Here’s how to get your boiler running again
With Met Office snow and ice warnings across the UK, many boilers may stop working due to a frozen condensate pipe.
The good news? It’s a simple fix — and you can usually do it yourself safely at home.
How do I know if it’s frozen?
✔ Part of your condensate pipe is outside
✔ You hear gurgling noises from the boiler
✔ You see error codes A01 or A61 on the display How to safely thaw your condensate pipe:
1️⃣ Locate the white plastic pipe outside your home. The blockage is often at a bend or at the end of the pipe.
2️⃣ Use warm (not boiling) water, a hot water bottle, or a cloth soaked in warm water to gently thaw the frozen section.
3️⃣ Once thawed, clear the fault and reset the boiler. I
It should start working normally again.
How to prevent it freezing again:
✔ Lag the pipe with weatherproof insulation
✔ Fit a drain cover to protect the end of the pipe Please check your condensate pipe before requesting an engineer, as frozen pipes aren’t covered by manufacturer warranty — and can usually be sorted in minutes.
Stay warm, stay safe.
