When a boiler failed at St John’s College, Cambridge, the priority was to restore reliable heating with a replacement that could be integrated into the existing plant room without an unnecessarily involved installation.

The Ferroli FORCE W was selected because its compact, wall-hung design and flexible controls offered a practical route to replacing the failed unit while retaining the other boilers already in place. That expectation was borne out on site: installation and set-up were both straightforward, helping to minimise disruption for the College.

A flexible solution for an existing plant room

The installation demonstrates an important advantage of the FORCE W: it can form part of a carefully designed mixed-manufacturer plant arrangement, rather than requiring every existing boiler to be replaced at the same time.

The FORCE W is designed for single or modular operation and can be installed in cascade configurations up to 600 kW. Its control options include a 0–10 V DC input together with Modbus and OpenTherm communication protocols, giving system designers useful flexibility when integrating the boiler with external controls and existing plant. As with any mixed-manufacturer cascade, compatibility and the control strategy should be confirmed for the individual system.

Available in outputs from 60 to 150 kW, the FORCE W combines a high-efficiency aluminium-silicon heat exchanger with a premix metal-fibre burner. It is suitable for natural gas or LPG and achieves Class 6 NOx performance under EN 15502-1.

Straightforward installation, successful outcome

By selecting a boiler suited to the constraints of the existing installation, the project avoided a more complex replacement programme. Commissioning was straightforward and the new FORCE W now operates alongside the retained plant.
